Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Marymount (Va.) University men's lacrosse team traveled across the river to the nation's capital for a rivalry matchup and season opener with Catholic University of America, falling 13-8.
Freshman Bryan Mcmanus came into the collegiate scene quickly in his first game as a Saint, recording a team-high five points off three goals and two assists to lead the offense that kicked off the evening with a 3-0 lead over the Cardinals through the first quarter.
In a game that saw 16 total penalties, nine by CUA, the first one came in the first minute of play after Catholic's Matt Michalski was sent to the penalty box for holding. Marymount didn't hesitate to take advantage of the man-up opportunity as freshmen Matthew Ebert and Josh McIvor connected for the first goal of the game and 2016 season.
Mcmanus followed with his first of three for the day at the 7:03 mark, catching a pass from sophomore Nathan Beard after a caused turnover on the other end of the field was forced by freshman Ryan Scinto. Keeping the pressure on the offensive end, the Saints saw another man-up opportunity in the final 30 seconds of the quarter after a pushing call sent a Cardinal to the sideline. With just 13 seconds remaining, the Saints picked up their third finish off a pass by Mcmanus to sophomore Brent Sulhoff to take a 3-0 advantage into the break.
Catholic found some offense to start the second quarter, getting out ahead of Marymount with four-straight goals to take a 4-3 advantage by the 6:42 mark. Mcmanus broke up the stretch for the Cardinals with his second goal, this time unassisted, to draw the score even at four apiece but CUA would find the back of the net once more before the half to take a 5-4 lead into the break.
The second half started up in favor of Catholic with two man-up goals in the opening minute. With the penalty not releasable, the Saints saw themselves still down a man after the two goals, but it didn't stop them from finding the back of the net. Cutting off the early run for the Cardinals was senior Matt Justice, ripping an unassisted finish for the man-down goal.
Senior goalkeeper Mike Kempel continued to try and hold back the Cardinals from spreading the score back out, turning away three shots over the next seven minutes, but CUA struck two more times before the end of the third quarter to take a 9-4 lead into the final 15 minutes.
The fourth quarter opened up with sophomore Daniel Bothwell winning the faceoff and scooping up the ground ball, eventually converting it to an Ebert unassisted finish, his first of his collegiate career. The Cardinals answered with a three-goal run to push a 12-6 advantage before Mcmanus and Justice connected to cut off the stretch. CUA scored one more time in the game before Mcmanus fired away his third and final goal of the game, as the clock rolled down on a 13-8 decision.
Beyond Mcmanus' five points, Justice found the back of the net twice while Sulhoff, Ebert and McIvor all added one.
Junior Shoshone Smith and freshmen John Trey Kailunas III and Scinto all registered two caused turnovers, and freshman Hunter McGeeney scooped up a team-high four groundballs. Kempel finished in the cage with 11 saves through his 60 minutes of play, and added three groundballs.
The men hit the road on Saturday, February 20 to open up Capital Athletic Conference play in Buena Vista, Virginia against Southern Virginia University. First faceoff is set for 2 p.m.
