Saints defeat Bobcats in five to cap off 2-0 weekend

FROSTBURG, Md.—The Marymount (Va.) University women's volleyball team improved to 6-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play after defeating Frostburg State University in five sets on Sunday, 3-2 (25-15, 23-25, 18-25, 25-21, 15-12).

In set one, both squads battled point-for-point through most of the first set until the Saints pulled away after piecing together a 5-0 run to take a 15-9 lead. Sophomore Ashton Walker sparked a 3-0 run, followed by a kill from senior Emileigh Rettig and an ace by freshman Theresa Buscemi to extend the Saints lead to 20-10. Junior Margaret McAlpin put down a kill for the final point of the set to win 25-15.

The Saints took an early 3-0 lead to start the second set, before the Bobcats answered. MU and FSU traded points up to 10-10 before Frostburg began to build a lead, reaching a six-point advantage, 18-12. In a late effort, the Saints got back within three following a 4-0 run, led by sophomore Caroline Hanson with two kills but would fall just short, 25-23.

Marymount trailed Frostburg early in set three, 7-4. As the momentum shifted back-and-forth MU couldn't get ahead of FSU but came within two at 15-13. Marymount couldn't overcome the deficit in the end, dropping set three, 25-18, to put Frostburg up 2-1 in the match.

The blue and white jumped ahead early in set four to take an, 8-4 lead and never looked back. Following a kill by McAlpin, the Saints led by six at 20-14 for their biggest lead of the set. Junior Christine Tieman fed Rettig for the last point of the set, as MU prevailed on top 25-21 to send the match to a deciding set. 

In the final game, the score would hold close throughout, with neither seeing more than a one-point advantage, until the Saints gained a two point lead at 10-8. The Saints were able to hold on to their lead until the Bobcats committed an error for the Saints to take set five, 15-12, and the match, 3-2.

Marymount was active all the way around on offense, seeing four different Saints register more than 10 kills. Rettig, McAlpin and senior Cailyn Thomas each added 12 kills apiece, followed by Walker who added 11. Tieman and Hanson each notched 27 assists apiece, while Rettig tied for a match-high 22 digs to lead the Saints on the defensive end.

The women will face off against CAC opponent University of Mary Washington in their next match, hosting the Eagles on Wednesday, October 26. UMW currently leads the conference with a 7-0 record followed by MU in second with a record of 6-1. First serve is set for 7 p.m., in the Verizon Sports Arena.
