Box Score FROSTBURG, Md. – The Marymount (Va.) University men's soccer team played much of the second half with a 10-man lineup following a red card, but two first-half penalty kicks were enough for the Saints to hold out for a 2-1 Capital Athletic Conference victory on Saturday night over Frostburg State University.
The Bobcats took the early advantage in the match, scoring their lone goal in the third minute. But the Saints rallied, putting away two goals of their own before the break.
A corner kick by sophomore Mynor Lopez was placed inside the 18-yard box in the 19th minute, but a yellow card by Frostburg would draw the play dead and award a penalty kick opportunity to the Saints. Senior Ahmed El-manialawy stepped up for the attempt, sending it past Bobcat goalkeeper Hassan Mostafa to draw the match even at 1-1.
As the clock ticked down in the final seconds of the first half, the Saints found themselves back on the penalty kick dot when the play inside the box was blown dead following a handball by the Bobcats. This time stepping up for the attempt was sophomore Rodney Ngoh, sending a bullet into the top left pocket of the net for what would play out to be the game-winning goal for the Saints.
With the lead to start the final 45 minutes, the Saints ran into another obstacle when Ngoh was handed a red card to move the lineup to just 10 players in the 55th minute. MU didn't back down from the challenge, as freshman goalkeeper John Valcicak and the rest of the MU defense locked down for the rest of the game to keep the Bobcats off the board.
Several late shots in a last effort by FSU were either pushed wide and high or stifled by Valcicak on the goal line, as the Saints held out for the 2-1 victory. Valcicak concluded his fourth win in net turning away five shots.
The men will round out the regular season on Wednesday, October 26 on the road at Christopher Newport University. First touch is set for 7 p.m.
