Box Score DOVER, Del.— The Marymount (Va.) University women's volleyball team rolled past Capital Athletic Conference opponent Wesley College on Wednesday night, 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-23), to remain untouched in league play with a 4-0 record, 17-5 overall.
In set one, the Saints went to work early, piecing together a 4-0 run to take a 5-2 lead. Junior Margaret McAlpin sparked the run on a kill, followed by back-to-back aces by senior Emileigh Rettig, before it was finished on a Wolverine error. Marymount continued to piece together small runs, gaining an eight-point advantage at 21-13. Sophomore Caroline Hanson set up McAlpin for the last kill of the set to win, 25-19.
MU picked right back up in set two to take a 7-4 lead before Wesley battled its way back into the set and take the lead at 9-8. Hanson answered the Wolverines with three-straight aces followed by back-to-back kills from McAlpin and Rettig to regain the lead at 14-10. The Saints maintained their lead as they cruised through the rest of the set on an 11-6 run, finished by three-straight kills from sophomore Maggie Munro, 25-16.
Set three proved to be a tougher battle between both squads, seeing multiple lead changes and ties throughout the set. The momentum shifted back-and-forth allowing no more than a three-point lead by either team. The Saints were able to keep their composure and finish on top, 25-23, to seal up their ninth three-set sweep of the season.
Senior Mallory Mitchell paced the Saints on offense, registering a match-high 12 kills. On the offensive end, seven Saints were able to notch at least one kill on the night to finish with a team total of 38 kills compared to Wesley's 27. Junior Christine Tieman and Hanson each added 11 and 17 assists, respectively, while freshman libero Theresa Buscemi led the defense with a match-high 13 digs. In front of the net, the Saints put up a wall that registered 18 total blocks, led by Munro's career-high eight, two of which were solo blocks.
The women will continue CAC play at Salisbury University on Friday, October 14. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
