SALISBURY, Md.—The Marymount (Va.) University men and women's swimming teams traveled to Salisbury University to face the Sea Gulls on Thursday night for a Capital Athletic Conference matchup. Both teams fell in a close matchup, moving the men's team to 2-4 overall, while the women move to 3-3 overall on the season.
Men's Swimming
The men's squad fell short in a 118-87 decision to the Sea Gulls on Thursday night. Freshman Ian Griffith provided the Saints with a strong performance and finished as a top scorer for the team. Griffith finished first in the 200-meter IM with a time of 2:33.24. He followed up with a second-place finish in the 100-meter butterfly (1:02.78), just .07 seconds behind the first-place finisher.
Junior James Gibbons also pieced together a nice performance for the blue and white, as a top-three finisher in the 100-meter butterfly and was a member of the 200-meter freestyle relay team and the 200-meter medley relay team that finished first. In the 100-meter butterfly, Gibbons finished just behind Griffith with a time of 1:03.32.
Marymount had several other swimmers claim the top two spots in their respective events. JuniorWilliam Bryan took first in the 100-meter breaststroke after touching the wall at 1:10.52. Bryan also swam on the 200-meter medley relay team that claimed first place. Junior Robert Klazynskisnatched second place in the 800-meter freestyle, finishing just seconds behind the top swimmer at a time of 9:43.76. Klazynski was also on the 200-meter freestyle relay team that placed first later in the evening. Senior Matt Essig battled for second place in the 200-meter freestyle (2:04.07).
The men started and finished strong with two first-place finishes in the 200-meter medley relay and the 200-meter freestyle relay. Sophomore Ross Wiley, freshman Isaiah Jones, Gibbons, and Bryan rallied together in the 200-medley relay to finish at 1:50.76. Junior Tyler Hayes, Gibbons, Jones, and Klazynski worked together to dominate in the 200-meter freestyle relay with a time of 1:40.71.
Women's Swimming
The Saints came up short as well, falling 132-73 Salisbury. Leading the Saints on the night was senior Taylor Hood who took first in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:11.67 and grabbed second in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 29.34. Hood was also a member of the top finishing 200-meter freestyle team. Freshman Katharina David pieced together an impressive meet after finishing in the top two in two individual events and was also a member of the 200-meter freestyle relay team that took first place. She finished second in both the 200-meter freestyle and the 100-meter freestyle with times of 2:16.38 and 1:03.09, respectively.
Marymount had several other swimmers claim top-two finishes in their respective events. FreshmanTaylor Plumley took first place in the 800-meter freestyle after touching the wall at 10:06.04. Plumley followed up later in the evening with a second place finish in the 400-meter freestyle (5:05.27). Sophomore Morgan Alston finished first in the 200-meter IM with a time of 2:36.06 and second in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:21.57).
The women finished the day strong by winning the 200-meter freestyle relay (2:00.76), which consisted of David, Hood, junior Kristen Kilroy, and sophomore Hanna Del Signore.
Both teams will continue on the road to face Howard University in a non-conference matchup on Friday, January 15. First race is set for 5 p.m.
