Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Two second-half goals shattered the Marymount (Va.) University men's soccer team's early lead Wednesday night, falling to Gettysburg College, 2-1, in the squad's final non-conference matchup of the regular season.
The match started out with the defense seeing a lot of pressure, including a Bullet shot off the crossbar in the opening two minutes. Several other shots were blasted by Gettysburg (6-0-1), before a miscue on the defensive end for the Bullets caused an own goal, resulting in a 1-0 lead for the Saints.
The goal sparked the Marymount (4-4) offense, getting off six shots in the 20 minutes of the first half. Freshmen Andre Ferguson and Brandon Orozco and junior Ahmed El-manialawy all fired two shots apiece, with four resulting in blocks by the backline and two going high or wide.
The Bullets drew the score even five minutes into the restart, capitalizing on a penalty-kick opportunity in the 51st minute. Trying to regain the lead, the Saints front line continued to put out shots, including a header off the crossbar by Orozco and two attempts on target that were pulled in by Bullet goalkeeper Peter Como.
With the clock ticking down, Gettysburg broke the silence with the game winner in the 82nd minute to take the 2-1 victory.
Senior Logan Cropper tended the net for the full 90 minutes, turning away three shots.
The men will travel back home for their next contest, as they open up Capital Athletic Conference play against Frostburg State University on Saturday, September 26 at Long Bridge Park. First touch is set for 7:30 p.m.
