Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. – Junior Kirsten Campbell and the Marymount (Va.) University women's soccer team opened up the 2015 slate in a great way on Tuesday night at Long Bridge Park, downing Eastern Mennonite University, 2-0, to redeem two overtime losses the past two seasons. Campbell recorded both goals to set a new career high and lead the Saints to a 1-0 start to the year.
It didn't take long for Marymount to get into the flow of the game, putting the Royals behind on the scoreboard in just the opening five minutes. A perfect ball from junior Chloe McAuliffe over the midfield line and through the defense was enough to get the wheels moving on Campbell, blowing right past the backline and drawing Royals' goalkeeper Becca Borg out of the 18-yard box. Borg attempted to fall on the ball, but a quick cut to the left by Campbell gave her plenty of open field and a tap in to the net for the early 1-0 lead.
The momentum would hold steady throughout the game tacking on two more shots in the first half, while the Saints' defense held the Royals to just one. Senior Erin Harris stepped into the net for the home opener and didn't disappoint. Throughout the full 90 minutes, Harris faced four shots on target and didn't skip a beat on any of them.
Seeing various opportunities just push wide or high to start the second half, the target started to get zoned in on quickly. For the game, the Saints blasted seven shots, five of which were on goal. The final shot on goal was once again off the foot of Campbell in the final four minutes of the game. Another great ball sent to the attack, this time by freshman Abigail Mercaldo, left just the speed of Campbell to get the job done the rest of the way. With quick feet and two cutbacks, the junior was able to sneak one past the keeper of a liner from the left side of eight-yard box.
The women will head on the road for their first of two tournaments in 2015, traveling to Buena Vista, Virginia for the SVU Classic. The opening round on Friday, September 4 will see the Saints matching up against Emory & Henry College, before meeting up with Ferrum College on Saturday. Both matches are set to begin at 5 p.m.
