Box Score 2 MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Marymount (Va.) University women's volleyball team finished off its road series on Saturday with two more matches at Allegheny College, going 1-1 for the day.
The Saints (10-4) opened the day with a three-set sweep of Thiel College, 3-0 (25-10, 25-17, 25-11), before dropping a four-game match to Lycoming College, 3-1 (25-23, 16-25, 16-25, 21-25).
Marymount vs. Thiel
In the first match of the day, the Saints came out strong and stayed strong through an impressive three-set sweep. A 31-kill match for MU on a .205 kill percentage, the attack was led by a match-high seven by junior Cailyn Thomas, who also came through on the defensive end with two solo blocks and five block assists. Freshman Caroline Hanson made her attack attempts count, leading the squad in kill percentage with a .364 for five kills.
Sophomore Christine Tieman put together a match-high 20 assists, while junior Emileigh Rettig had a match high in digs with nine.
Marymount vs. Lycoming
MU carried the momentum of a great first match into a tougher opponent in the second match against the Warriors. The Saints pulled out a close first set, grabbing a 25-23 victory, but two-straight sets claimed by Lycoming at 25-16 in each swayed the advantage. The fourth set remained close throughout, ultimately seeing the Warriors hold on to the lead for a 25-21 decision and take the match, 3-1.
The Saints led the attack with 46 kills as a team, compared to the 38 by the Warriors, while Rettig was the lone player for MU to reach double digits with 10. Senior Morgan McAlpin and Hanson were both close behind with nine apiece.
Hanson and Tieman split the assists through the match, sending out 22 each through the four sets. Senior libero Courtney Phung paced the defense for Marymount with nine digs, while Thomas came through on blocks with two solos and three block assists.
The women will travel back home for their next match, taking on Gettysburg College on Wednesday, September 23. This is the Saints first home match since the season opener against Stevenson University on September 1. Start time is set for 7 p.m.
