Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – After nabbing an overtime victory on Saturday, the Marymount (Va.) University men's soccer team carried that momentum into the final day of the MU Invitational against host Methodist University, scoring early and holding it for a 1-0 victory. With the two wins this weekend, the Saints were named the tournament champions.
The game saw several shots come off early by the Monarchs in the opening seven minutes, but the wall held strong in front of senior goalkeeper Logan Cropper consisting of freshmen Jose Ormeno and Rodney Ngoh, sophomore Nick Hars and senior Carlos Salas, blocking all three shots.
Transitioning to the offensive end for Marymount (3-3), the Saints capitalized on their first attempt of the day. The first goal in Saturday's game against North Carolina Wesleyan College was scored by freshman Brandon Orozco. In Sunday's game, the goal was scored by his cousin, freshman John-Paul Orozco, an unassisted finish that would be enough to win the match, 1-0.
There were several attempts by both squads in the second half to try and adjust the score on the board, including three shots by junior Ahmed El-manialawy, but the score would remain the same.
Cropper was put to work twice in the game, both on late shots in the second half, but the senior pulled in both attempts to record his first shutout of the season in net.
The men will continue their road series on Wednesday, September 16, as the Saints travel to Shenandoah University for a non-conference matchup. First touch is set for 7 p.m., on Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium.
