Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – For the second time in three games, freshman Rodney Ngoh boosted the Marymount (Va.) University men's soccer team into the win column with an overtime game-winning goal, this time in the opening game of the MU Invitational against North Carolina Wesleyan College for a 2-1 victory.
The scoring opened up in favor of the Saints (2-3) with freshman Brandon Orozco connecting on an unassisted finish in the 18th minute. With both defenses putting in their work and holding strong, the first 45 minutes gave both goalkeepers little work, seeing senior Logan Cropper need to turn away just one shot.
Cropper would be put to work in the second half though, making eight more saves, but letting one slip by in the 53rd minute. Off a corner and the Wesleyan offense in its set piece, the cross was good enough for the Bishops' Julius Oskarsson to get a foot on the ball to redirect it into the back of the net.
With the Wesleyan offense looking for the goal to put it ahead, Cropper held strong on the backline not allowing another one past him.
Taking the game to extra time, Cropper came up big on a game-winning save less than two minutes in. The momentum would transfer into the offensive end, when the play was blown dead on a yellow card for the Bishops. Taking the free kick was senior Carlos Salas, who sent a perfect ball into the 18-yard box where it met the head of Ngoh for the redirect and game-winning goal.
Cropper set a new career high in saves with 10 for the game. Through five games, the senior has turned away 26 shots, while maintaining a 1.56 goals-against average.
The men are back in action on Sunday for day two of the MU Invitational, taking on host Methodist University at 1 p.m.
