Box Score Arlington, Va. – Four goals from both Taylor Johnson and Abby Wescott saw the Marymount women's lacrosse team coast past visiting Wesley on Wednesday night. The Saints outdueled the Wolverines 15-8 in the twilight tilt at Long Bridge Park, improving to 4-8 on the season and 2-3 in league play.
Wesley may have opened the scoring, but it was Marymount that controlled the first half. The Saints used unanswered strikes from Johnson, Natalie Tinkham, and Catina Boster to swipe the lead and build a 3-1 advantage. The Wolverines cut that deficit to one, 3-2, at the 17:39 mark, but the Marymount bombardment was far from over.
Another three consecutive goals – from Wescott, Johnson, and Megan McGuirk, respectively – again upped the ante to 6-2. A Wesley tally with 12:39 showing broke the streak, but another blast from Wescott at the 12:22 mark negated the Wolverine effort and brought the score to 7-3.
Using a feed from Tinkham, Johnson secured her hat trick with 11:37 left to play in the opening frame. McGuirk added a strike – off a quick pass from Jacki Belker – to extend the margin to 9-3 at the 8:04 mark.
Wescott wrapped up her hat trick with 1:59 remaining, but a Wesley goal rounded out the first half. Marymount carried the 10-4 advantage into the intermission.
The second frame saw Wescott cap her big day with barely a minute gone. The rookie netted her fourth at the 29:12 mark, though the Wolverines responded almost instantly with a quick strike off the ensuing draw.
With the 11-5 lead in pocket, the Saints went back to work. Wescott placed tremendous feeds to both Tinkham and Cat Powell at the 19:30 and 18:17 marks, respectively, to increase the lead to 13-5. Powell and Johnson each added tallies over the next five minutes for the comfortable ten-goal cushion, 15-5.
Wesley netted three unanswered goals in an attempted comeback, but Marymount goalkeeper Tylar Abrams protected the cage tactfully down the stretch – collecting seven second-half saves to secure the win.
Marymount returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Christopher Newport for a weekend showdown. Start time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
