Box Score Fredericksburg, Va. – The Marymount men's lacrosse team closed out the regular season with quite the tussle at Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon, falling 8-7 as the Eagles netted the game-winner within the final two minutes. The Saints finish their 2015 campaign at 5-10 overall and 2-6 in league action.
Nico Burns opened the scoring with an unassisted beam at the 13:08 mark – driving through the Eagles backline for the early 1-0 advantage. Miles Davis single-handedly doubled the Saints initial effort over the next three minutes, putting UMW on top, 2-1, with 10:14 remaining in the first.
Rookie Dylan Watkins chipped in a goal at the 9:35 mark, but the tally was soon negated with another Mary Washington strike with 7:55 left to play in the frame. The remaining first-quarter ticks proved uneventful.
The second stanza saw a quiet chess match unfold. Both sides earned long possessions and numerous opportunities, but only one goal apiece. Watkins netted his second at the 9:57 mark, while the UMW blast came just two minutes later with 8:04 to play. The Eagles protected their 4-3 lead carefully and towed it into the break.
Back-to-back blasts from Brent Sulhoff and Burns kicked off the third quarter, giving Marymount the narrow edge, 5-4, with 8:48 on the clock. Mary Washington responded in kind to close the frame, notching a pair to retake the thin margin, 6-5.
The fourth quarter proved almost identical. The Saints netted two quick goals – courtesy of Matt Justice and Kellan McCarthy – to swipe the 7-6 lead heading into the final eight minutes. The Eagles punched in the equalizer with 7:03 left to play in the contest, and from there the deadlock ensued.
Mary Washington controlled the next faceoff and settled in for a lengthy stay in the Marymount zone. The five-minute flurry finally ended as the Eagles notched the would-be game-winner with about two minutes on the clock. The 8-7 edge would hold for the few remaining ticks.
Burns solidifies his place among the Marymount elite in terms of scoring, finishing tenth all-time in program history with his 81 career goals. Garrett Nealon also earns a place in the Marymount record books with his 40 career assists – good for eighth all-time.
