Box Score Arlington, Va. – The Marymount women's lacrosse team dropped its regular season finale on Saturday afternoon, suffering an 18-10 fate at the hands of long-time CAC foe Mary Washington. The Saints round out their 2015 season at 4-11 overall and 2-6 in league play.
Taylor Johnson propelled the offense with four goals on the day, but it was her teammates who laid the groundwork early in the contest.
Back-to-back blasts from Abby Wescott and Jacki Belker saw the Saints jump out to a 2-0 lead by the 27:14 mark.
The next five minutes housed the Eagles grand reply – four unanswered goals for the sudden 4-2 advantage. Marymount responded in kind – using three consecutive tallies to negate the UMW surge. Megan McGuirk used a feed from Wescott to narrow the margin to one, 4-3, while Johnson and Steph Keane each notched goals for the 5-4 Saints edge with 15:55 to play.
The pattern progressed over the closing minutes, as Mary Washington netted another three goals, taking the 7-5 lead into halftime.
The Eagles began the second half much like they ended the first – registering yet another three-goal flurry for the 10-5 advantage by the 27:06 mark. Johnson broke the momentum with a lone tally with 26:35 showing, but UMW shot back with four consecutive blasts – reigning in a 15-6 margin with 18:13 remaining in the content.
Again, it was Johnson who snapped the Mary Washington impetus, slamming home a free-position attempt at the 17:03 mark. UMW netted a lone strike in response, negating the effort, but goals from Cat Powell and Johnson, respectively, brought the Saints within seven, 16-9, with 9:10 on the clock.
The next two blasts came from the Eagles – at the 7:05 and 3:17 marks, respectively. Natalie Tinkham had the final say with a quick blast with 3:04 remaining, but UMW ran out the clock and sealed the deal at 18-10.
Johnson ends her stellar four-year career with 135 goals – good for second all-time in Marymount program history. McGuirk solidifies her place atop the leaderboard in terms of career assists – upping the all-time record to 61.
