Fourth-Quarter Flurry Fells Saints

Box Score

Arlington, Va. – Though five different Saints scored in the effort, the Marymount men's lacrosse team dropped its weekend bout against Albright, as the Lions captured a 10-5 victory Saturday afternoon at Long Bridge Park.

Through three quarters, the two teams appeared very evenly matched, trading goals early and often to maintain the minuscule margins.  Marymount struck first, though not until the 4:32 mark, when Max Johnson punched in his first of the season off a feed from Nate Beard.

The next possession saw a series of rather unfortunate events unfold for the Saints.  A failed clear attempt seemed to rattle Marymount and swing the momentum ever so slightly in the Lions' favor.  The visitors netted the equalizer less than a minute later to close out the first period.

Back on even ground, Marymount looked ready to break out, capitalizing on a man-up opportunity carried over from the opening frame.  Jimmy Wendall took a pass form Garrett Nealon and pumped a bullet swiftly past Albright netminder Nicholas Pisko for the 2-1 lead.  The Saints continued their assault on the cage, but all subsequent blows either missed the mark or were cleanly absorbed by Pisko.

A Saints turnover led to ten consecutive shots from the Lions over a six-minute span – four of which were snared by Marymount goalie Mike Kempel.  Albright used its 11th straight shot to knot the game, and – after winning the ensuing faceoff – took the 3-2 lead just moments later.  The one-goal margin persisted for the remaining first-half ticks.

The third quarter saw Marymount rebound quickly, as Garrett Nealon sniped his second goal of the season to even the playing field once again, 3-3.

Looking to steal back the lead, Michael Mene forced an Albright turnover after the Lions won the ensuing faceoff.  Back in control, Marymount saw Jimmy Wendell find Nico Burns, who sent an absolute missile from at least ten yards out to swipe the 4-3 advantage.

Continuing the seesaw affair, Albright wasted no time striking back.  Despite swiping the faceoff, Marymount coughed up the ball in Lions' territory, allowing the visitors to march right back down the field and even the match at 4-4.

A six-minute scoreless drought persisted before either team found net, as Albright retook the lead, 5-4, following a relentless four-shot flurry on Kempel.  Unfortunately, the Saints would not lead again.

The squads tangoed for almost five minutes in the fourth before Albright broke the silence with back-to-back strikes – upping the advantage to 7-4.  The Saints, desperate for momentum, responded quickly as Brent Sulhoff set up Matt Justice for a picturesque strike with 8:23 left to play.

Five more minutes melted away before Albright notched its eighth at the 3:42 mark.  The Lions added two insurance goals in the final two minutes as well, though Marymount failed to retort and add to its five-goal performance.  The Lions ran down the clock to secure the 10-5 win.

Marymount returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Hood for a nonconference rendezvous.  Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
