Saints Fall Twice in CVC Action

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Huntingdon, Pa. – The Marymount men's volleyball team dropped a pair this weekend, falling to Thiel on Friday before dropping a Saturday night affair to No. 4 Juniata.  The Saints fall to 2-9 overall and 0-3 in league play with the losses.

Thiel 3, Marymount (Va.) 0     (21-25, 23-25, 25-27)
Marymount battled  Thiel down to the wire in each set, though the Saints failed to solve the Tomcats when the night was said and done.

Graham Clark continued his strong presence at the net, registering a team-high ten kills while adding two blocks and two digs.  Albert Johannson and Tomasz Ksiazkiewicz rounded out the Marymount attack with seven and six kills, respectively.

On the defensive end, Jordan Pawlicki settled in for a match-high 14 digs, while Ben Steranka collected a team-high three blocks.

The third set saw the Saints almost overtake the host to force a fourth.  Marymount won the race to 25, surpassing the Tomcats narrowly, 25-24, thanks to a timely service error.

The next three points, however, fell in favor of the home court.  Two ensuing Marymount attack errors saw the Tomcats resurface, 26-25, and a service ace put the match away.

#4 Juniata 3, Marymount (Va.) 0     (21-25, 14-25, 20-25)
An notable opponent, No. 4 Juniata proved too much for the Saints to handle on Saturday night.

Clark had a team-high .375 hitting percentage on the night to go along with  a match-high 13 kills.  TJ Wiechecki came alive after a relatively quiet match the day before, registering ten kills against the Eagles, while Erich Bratke chipped in a match-high 31 assists in the CVC tilt.

Juniata outhit the Saints .458 to .250 over the course of the contest.  The host also registered an impressive nine service aces to the Saints' one.

The Eagles jumped out to an 8-5 lead early in the first set. The Saints rallied for four straight points to go eventually swipe a brief 12-11 advantage.  Juniata, unfazed, countered with a 5-0 run, retaking the lead, 16-12.

The to-and-fro, however, was still yet to be finished.  Marymount answered with another four-point swing to knot the game at 16-16.  The Eagles stole back the lead, though their time in front proved incredibly short-lived, as a service error saw the Saints re-tie the set at 20-20.

Back-to-back kills by Juniata put the host ahead, 22-20.  Though a Johannson kill cut the deficit to one, 22-21, two ensuing services aces ended the set in the Eagles' favor.

Juniata held firm control throughout the second set, and cruised to the win – swiping the 2-0 lead in the match.  Marymount led 12-9 in the third game, but the Eagles rallied and eventually overtook the Saints, 18-17.  A 7-3 run by the Eagles ended the match definitively.

Marymount returns to action on Friday when it travels to Cairn for another league match.  First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
