Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. – It was a sea of pink today on the court, where the Marymount (Va.) University women's volleyball team took on the visiting Frostburg State University Bobcats in its annual Dig Pink game in honor of breast cancer awareness month. The Saints battled in their second Capital Athletic Conference matchup of the season, eventually toppling Frostburg, 3-1 (25-20, 25-27, 25-18, 25-19).
The contest started out strong for the Saints, jumping out to an early 10-5 lead on the Bobcats, before FSU went on a five-point run of its own. Marymount fought right back with another five-point run to extend its lead to 17-10. The Saints held their lead for the rest of the set, ending with a kill from sophomore Christine Tieman.
Set two ended much closer than the first due to the intensity of the rallies. Early on in the set, junior Mallory Mitchell gave the Saints a 6-3 lead of a solo block. The score remained close until MU pulled away following junior Cailyn Thomas' kill from the middle to take the score to 21-16. The Bobcats fired back and tied the game up at 24 apiece. Three points later, FSU took the second set, 27-25.
The third set was very back and forth. The score stayed close with neither team gaining more than a two-point advantage until the Saints broke it open, going on a six-point run to push the score to 17-13. The stretch was one of the two largest in the match. A huge block from freshman Caroline Hanson capped off the Saints run. Following a FSU timeout, the Saints did not look back, finishing the third set behind a kill from freshman Emily Abramaitys.
Following a 7-7 tie in the fourth set, the Saints started to run away with it. Marymount brought its lead to 15-11 following an over-pass kill from Thomas. Another run from the Bobcats cut the Marymount lead to two, 17-15, but it was not enough to stop the momentum of the Saints. Senior Morgan McAlpin had two of the last five points for the Saints including a block and a well-placed kill to the back line of the court.
The attack was paced by a team-high 15 kills by Thomas, while McAlpin landed 11. Assists were dished out by Hanson and Tieman with 17 and 14, respectively, as senior Courtney Phung led the defensive front with a match-high 21 digs.
The Saints improve to 14-5 on the season, 2-0 in the CAC. The Bobcats fall to 10-12 and 0-2 in the CAC.
The next game for the women will take place Friday, October 9 at Wesley College in Dover, Delaware. The start of the match is set for 7p.m.
