Box Score DOVER, Del. – The Marymount (Va.) University women's soccer team traveled down to Wesley College slightly earlier on Saturday for an adjusted start time to early afternoon due to weather conditions. In their third Capital Athletic Conference matchup of the season, the Saints came up short in a 6-1 decision to the Wolverines.
Wesley jumped on the Saints early, finding the back of the net in the fifth minute. But MU didn't sit back, looking to even the score back out with two quick shots after the restart. Junior Kirsten Campbell fired the first attempt before senior Erin Harris had her first shot of the game several minutes later, but both opportunities soared just wide.
The Wolverines tacked on a few more finishes before halftime to take a 4-0 lead, but again the Saints kept working to cut down Wesley's momentum. Before the first 45 were finished, junior Chloe McAuliffe gave Marymount its first attempt on target, but Wesley goalkeeper Taylor Lynch pulled it in.
Unable to slow down the Wolverine attack in the early part of the second half, Wesley added another goal prior to the Saints getting on the board in the 66th minute. McAuliffe collected a poor clearance attempt and drove the ball into the 18-yard box. Pulling out the keeper, the junior midfielder laid down a low shot on the near post for the Saints' lone goal.
Freshman Carolina Saavedra tended the net for the full 90 minutes, starting in her first collegiate match. Through the game, she turned away four attempts.
The women are back in action on Friday, October 9, welcoming Penn State University-Harrisburg to Long Bridge Park for a league matchup. First touch is set for 7 p.m.
