Box Score BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Marymount (Va.) University women's soccer team took the road for a Capital Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon against Southern Virginia University, falling behind early to drop a 4-1 decision.
The Saints welcomed back junior April Westmark to the field, tending the net for the first time since her freshman year after being sidelined with an injury. Guarding the cage for the full 90 minutes, Westmark turned away four shots.
The junior was tested early in the match, seeing 10 shots through the first half with three making it into the back of the net. But MU's offense didn't back down to the deficit, chipping away at it before the half.
As the clock was ticking down to the break, the Saints utilized each second wisely up to the last one when the blue and white connected on their lone goal of the match. A throw in by the Knights on the right side of the field was taken away quickly by junior Chloe McAuliffe, dribbling it inside the 18-yard box to the end line. With a sharp pass to the top of the box, the ball met the foot of junior Kirsten Campbell who ripped a shot to the back left post over the hands of the keeper as the clock hit zero.
Although the first half had the Knights outshooting the Saints, 10-6, the final 45 minutes played into the favor of MU, 8-7. It just wasn't enough to break down the Southern Virginia defense, as SVU held onto its lead to take the match 4-1.
Campbell led the team in shots for the game with six, four on target, as six different Saints fired off attempts.
The women will now travel home for another conference tilt, as Marymount welcomes St. Mary's College of Maryland to Long Bridge Park for Senior Day. The match is also labeled as Campers Appreciation, inviting all the young athletes that attended the women's soccer camps over the summer to the game. At the end of the game, each child will receive a poster of the Saints' squad that they can have signed by the team on the field. First touch is set for 1 p.m.
