Box Score ARLINGTON, Va.—The Marymount (Va.) University women's volleyball team defeated Capital Athletic Conference opponent York College of Pennsylvania in four sets on Saturday afternoon, 3-1 (25-20, 25-16, 18-25, 25-17). Junior Emileigh Rettig had an impressive performance capturing a match- and career-high 20 kills.
The Saints took a 1-0 lead but would trade points with the Spartans until a 4-0 run put the Saints up 10-4. The run was led by a kill from junior Hannah Steger and a service ace from Rettig. York battled back but would never take the lead, as both teams traded points until the set reached 22-20 in favor of the Saints. Set one would end off a 3-0 run by Marymount led by a kill and service ace from senior Morgan McAlpin.
The Saints came out swinging to take a 10-2 lead in set two after Rettig racked up six kills and sophomore Margaret McAlpin added two more. The Spartans didn't go away, closing the spread to one at 14-13. However, Marymount continued its offensive dominance going on an 8-1 run with kills coming from junior Mallory Mitchell and Margaret. Junior Cailyn Thomas ended the set with a kill fed by sophomore Christine Tieman.
Freshman Caroline Hanson started set three with a service ace but Marymount wouldn't hold onto the lead in this one. York put together a few small runs forcing Marymount to take a timeout after going down 6-13. The Saints would later battle back after kills by Rettig and Margaret to come within three of the Spartans, but the run would prove to not be enough as a kill by York's Kelly Cavey ended the set 18-25.
In set three, the Saints took advantage of several Spartan errors and kills from Rettig, Morgan, Margaret, and Thomas to take an early 10-2 lead. The run forced a York timeout, but Marymount continued to build one of its biggest leads of the set, 16-5. Marymount continued on the attack, adding kills from several players reaching another 11-point lead at 22-11. The Spartans, however, battled back to 22-17 to come within five of the Saints. Marymount's offense proved to be too much as back-to-back kills from Rettig and Hanson followed by a service ace from Rettig finished the set 25-17.
Rettig led the offense and defense with 20 kills and 15 digs. Hanson racked up a team-high 30 assists followed by Tieman with 13. Senior Courtney Phung also scooped up 15 digs on the defensive end.
The Spartan offense was led by Brooke Krebs with 12 kills, while Sarah Wukitch sent out a match-high 33 assists. Katherine Graziano had a match-high 17 digs to lead the Spartan defense.
The women will continue Capital Athletic Conference play on the road at Southern Virginia University on Wednesday, October 21 in Buena Vista, Virginia. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
