Lions overcome deficit to down Saints, 4-3

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. – After a long hour and 15 minute delay due to lightning, the Marymount (Va.) University women's soccer team finally took the rain soaked field against Capital Athletic Conference foe Penn State University-Harrisburg on Friday night, falling in a thriller, 4-3.

The Saints wasted no time before lighting up the scoreboard. In the eighth minute, senior Erin Harris teed off a free-kick opportunity from roughly 35-yards out, which sailed right over the head of the Lions' keeper to notch her first goal of the season.

Marymount followed up the quick score with another one from senior Lexi Swartz several minutes later. After Harris crossed a high arcing ball from near midfield, senior Chloe McAuliffe corralled the ball and tapped it to Swartz, who put a low ball into the left side of the net.

A goal and an assist just weren't enough for Harris, who then sent a long ball from behind midfield to junior Kirsten Campbell outside of the 18-yard box.  Taking the ball in stride, Campbell fired a bullet to the left of the net for the 3-0 advantage.

Before the end of the first half, Penn State cut the deficit to two off a free-kick goal, but the Saints still took a 3-1 lead into the break.

Making adjustments for the second half, the final 45 minutes played in favor of the Lions, who managed to rally off three more goals to take over the lead for the first time in the game by the 82nd minute.

With time ticking down on the Saints, they made several last ditch attempts to even the score back up including a shot by Harris that was blocked and a header shot following a corner by junior Rebekah Krasinski that sailed just high. In the closing minutes, the Lions played the ball down into their offensive end and maintained possession for the comeback victory.

Junior Joanna Chenaille registered 12 saves in her first collegiate start in goal.

Harris finished the match with a career-high four points off a goal and two assists.

The Saints are back in action for another CAC tilt on Wednesday, October 14, as they welcome Frostburg State University to Long Bridge Park. First touch is set for 7 p.m.
