Marymount Volleyball Falls in ECAC Finals

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Annville, Pa. – After defeating Swarthmore in semifinal action earlier in the day, the Saints advanced to the 2014 ECAC Division III Southeast women's volleyball championship match against top-seeded Lebanon Valley.  The Flying Dutchmen quickly cornered Marymount with a 2-0 set lead, and eventually downed the Blue and White and snatched the title match 3-1 (23-25, 19-25, 25-22, 19-25).

The Saturday split sees the Saints swipe the ECAC Southeast Region runner-up spot for the second year in a row.  Marymount ends its impressive 2014 campaign at the 28-11 mark – a new program record for most wins in a single season.

Despite jumping out to early leads in both the first and second sets, the Saints just could not solve the Lebanon Valley attack.  The Dutchmen fought their way back to a 9-8 lead, though the Blue and White proved a persistent force – knotting the score twice more before succumbing to an 8-2 run by the host.  Kills from Becca Schroeder and Cailyn Thomas helped to cut the deficit to 22-21, but a pair of unforced errors cost the Saints down the stretch.

Just like the previous game, the Saints swiped that early lead in the second set, but the Dutchmen used a timely run to jump out in front.  Marymount drew as close as 15-13, courtesy of LVC attack errors, but the top-seed proved insurmountable.  The Dutchmen closed the second set with an authoritative 10-6 run.

Despite the host's obvious momentum, the Saints were able to dig themselves out of a four-point hole in the third set to get on the board.  The Blue and White did not lead until they swiped a 19-18 advantage, but the late run proved just enough to fend off the Dutchmen's championship bid a while longer.

About halfway through the fourth set, however, it was clear that Lebanon Valley had found that championship fire and the steady rhythm needed to fuel it.  The Dutchmen lead extended as far as 17-10 at its largest – and even the Saints' ensuing five-point rally was not enough to swing the momentum.  The dominant Dutchmen countered with a 5-0 run of their own, eventually reaching match point at 24-19.  An LVC kill ended the championship match decisively and handed the Saints their second ECAC silver in as many seasons.

Thomas and Morgan McAlpin posted identical stat-lines, as both players registered 11 kills and a pair of blocks in the championship match.  Ashley Cabrera chipped in 20 assists in the final effort.

Senior Cassidie Watson collected 13 digs in her final match as a Saint, while classmate Erin Allison rounded out an impressive career with eight kills, nine digs, and two blocks against the Dutchmen.
