Box Score Arlington, Va. – Contact, commentary, and cautions were in no short supply on Wednesday night, as Marymount downed Wesley 1-0 in an absolutely explosive match to snap its recent skid. With eight total cautions and an ejection doled out over the 90-minute scuffle, "physical" would be a fiercely inadequate description of the turbulent twilight tilt.
The Saints collect their first CAC win with the shutout, while also improving to 3-9 on the season behind the noteworthy performance from the Marymount backline.
Marymount, having failed to score over its past four matches, took the field with a palpable sense of urgency. The Blue and White exuded an almost-contagious energy, personified by the squad's first – and the game's only – goal.
Tristan Munoz sent a lofty pass into Saints' leading-scorer Ahmed Elmanialawy, who wasted no time breaking the stalemate in just the third minute of the match. The sophomore striker deftly danced by the Wolverine defense until he found room enough to unleash a low laser just past Wesley keeper Zack Baker.
With the 1-0 advantage in tow, Marymount settled in nicely for the match's remaining 87 minutes. Both squads had multiple chances to add to the day's lonely strike, but the target seemed to only grow smaller as the minutes melted from the clock.
The second half saw Wesley threaten numerous times, but the Wolverines just could not solve Marymount netminder Logan Cropper, who collected seven saves in his third win – and second shutout – of the season.
The Saints return to action on Sunday when they travel to St. Mary's (Md.) for another CAC battle. Match time is set for 3:30 p.m.
