Saints Drop Double-Overtime Heartbreaker

Box Score

Arlington, Va. – Regulation proved too little time to determine a winner on Wednesday afternoon, as the Saints pushed the visiting Knights to double-overtime in the highly defensive duel.  Unfortunately for Marymount, Southern Virginia struck gold in the 104th minute to nab the CAC victory and drop the Blue and White to 0-7 in conference action.  The Saints skid to 1-13-1 overall with the loss.

The Knights got on the board first, as the CAC's leading-scorer Tatiana Monsen punched in her 15th goal of the season in just the 9th minute.  The forward glided gracefully through the Marymount backline, beating the nearest defender with a dribble and point-blank finish on the right side.

Marymount, having suffered an offensive dry spell throughout October, finally broke through in the 39th minute for the equalizer.  Kirsten Campbell dribbled deep into the right corner, serving the ball beautifully to teammate Hannah Lawton just beyond the 15-yard mark.  Lawton collected herself and unleashed a strike – sailing the Saints' first and only score into the upper left corner.

From there, a methodical chess match ensued, with both teams attacking carefully and defending steadfastly.  The scoreless drought persisted through the second half, with the squads combining for only ten shots in the period.

The first overtime frame proved much of the same, as the teams were only able to construct one good chance apiece.

It was about halfway through that second overtime period that Monsen found herself in the right place, at the right time.  A teammate's deflected shot landed right at the striker's feet – a convenient opportunity for the conference's most noteworthy offensive weapon.  With Marymount keeper Holly Wenger out of position due to the recent deflection, Monsen poured in the chance without hesitation in that 104th minute.

The Saints return to action on Saturday when they host CAC rival Wesley.  Marymount will take a moment to recognize its senior class before first touch at 1 p.m.
