Box Score Arlington, Va. – Thirty minutes proved time enough to determine a winner on Wednesday night, as the contest's fourth and final goal came at just the 29:32 mark. Southern Virginia netted three goals over a swift two-minute span to down Marymount in the quick-hitting 3-1 decision. The Saints slip to 1-6 in CAC action and 3-13 overall with the loss.
The Knights jumped on top in the 17th minute, as Josh Smith somehow turned a potentially disastrous miskick into the night's first tally. The striker wound up for a shot, but only scuffed the ball, sending it no more than mere inches away. Smith quickly regrouped, took another step into the ball, and punched the second effort into the net's lower right corner.
With the 1-0 advantage and unmistakable momentum, Southern Virginia continued to haunt the Saints' defense at a torrid pace. Just moments later at the 19:31 mark, Carlos Munoz would make good on a Marymount foul, sending in a free kick and upping the lead to 2-0.
Apparently still flustered from the foul, free kick, and subsequent goal, the Saints committed a turnover almost immediately following the game's restart.
Erik Gutierrez pounced on the Marymount miscue, sending a serious strike in from at least 45 yards out and somehow finding the back of the net.
Now faced with a nagging 3-0 deficit, the Saints found fortitude enough to pursue more and more offensive chances. Finally, in the 29th minute, Carlos Sanchez snatched a loose ball from about 35 yards out and unleashed a missile in the direction of Knights' keeper Efren Gutierrez. The netminder, though well-positioned to make the save, could do no more than slow down the well-struck blast – Sanchez's first goal of the season.
The scoreboard would taunt the Blue and White with the unfortunate 3-1 deficit for the game's remaining ticks, as neither side could match the intensity seen in that opening frame.
Marymount travels to Frostburg State on Saturday for another CAC matchup. First touch is slated for 1 p.m.
