Box Score Arlington, Va. – A single tally in just the seventh minute proved the deciding factor on Saturday afternoon, as the Marymount University men's soccer squad dropped a 1-0 decision to CAC foe Penn State Harrisburg. With the Saints having snuck past the Lions in double-overtime last season, Saturday's match proved an explosive sequel to the teams' budding rivalry. The fiery match drops the Saints to 3-12 on the season and 1-5 in conference action.
A frenzied flurry in the seventh minute proved Marymount's ultimate demise, as Penn State Harrisburg somehow found the net betwixt an army of Saints' defenders. A corner kick – courtesy of Aaron Kline – sailed into a medley of Saints and Lions, with Mike Jones winning the ball and punching it in for what would be the game-winning goal.
Marymount had no problem generating quality offensive chances throughout the contest, attempting 12 shots, six on goal. Back-to-back blasts in the 66th minute provided the Saints with their best chance to notch the equalizer.
The Lions committed a turnover on their half of the field, leading to a Carlos Sanchez shot from just beyond the 25-yard mark. The attempt was swatted away by Penn State keeper Brandon Hoover, but the rebound found Carlos Salas on the right side, and he sent in a zinger that careened heavily off the post and out of play.
Making his season debut between the pipes, Kurt Michaels gathered nine saves in his day's work – the second-most saves collected by any Saints' keeper in a single game this season.
Marymount returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts CAC counterpart Southern Virginia in its home finale. First touch is slated for 7 p.m. at Long Bridge Park.
