Saints Stifled at Salisbury

Box Score

Salisbury, Md. – The CAC's top team proved a bit too much for the Saints to handle on Thursday afternoon, as Salisbury burned the Blue and White with five unmatched goals.  Marymount slips to 1-4 in conference play and 3-11 on the season with the loss.

The Seagulls broke the stalemate early, as Tanner East dribbled up the left side and unleashed a winding shot past Marymount keeper Logan Cropper from the 18-yard mark.

With the 1-0 advantage secured in that 16th minute, Salisbury pursued a second strike vehemently, firing off an additional eight shots to no avail over those remaining first half ticks.  Marymount dabbled on the host's end of the field, but failed to notch the equalizer and dragged the one-goal deficit into the break.

The second half proved almost an entirely different match, as Salisbury suddenly stumbled upon its conference-leading stride.  The Seagulls extended their advantage to 2-0 in just the 51st minute, using a pair of headers to pop a shot just over Cropper in net.  Josh Burdin used a cross to architect the play, finding East first, who in turn found Stephen Poorman for the finish.

Marymount took the ball downfield maybe once before Salisbury poured in its third goal of the match.  Benjamin Aryeetey headed a ball in, which was deflected out and re-fired by Dennis Runikera into the net's lower right corner.

The hiatus in scoring saw frustrations grow on the Saints' side, as Marymount collected six fouls and a caution in the 15-minute span between Salisbury strikes.  With the ball never truly leaving Blue and White territory, the Seagulls poured in their fourth goal in the 74th minute.  Michael Feeney found Brooks Zentgraf with a ball just within the 18-yard box; Zentgraf in turn dribbled past Cropper and took advantage of the unimpeded net.

Plagued with a four-goal deficit, the Saints struggled to build any threats against the now well-insured Salisbury squad.  After a Marymount foul in the box in the 86th minute, the Seagulls capped their scoring efforts with a fifth and final goal – using Danny Maskell's penalty kick to seal the deal.

Tristan Munoz led the Saints' attack with three shots – all of which were snared by Salisbury keeper Drew Staedeli.

Marymount returns to action on Saturday as it hosts CAC foe Penn State Harrisburg at Long Bridge Park.  The Saints will recognize their senior class prior to first touch at 1 p.m.
