Box Score Arlington, Va. – The Saints proved absolutely fearless at the net on Wednesday night, posting a season-high 14 team blocks on their way to a four-set win (25-23, 23-25, 25-14, 30-28) over CAC foe Salisbury. Marymount remains unbeaten in conference play with the win, improving to 4-0 in CAC action and 22-5 on the year.
The night's first two sets, as evidenced by the paper-thin margins of victory, proved intense point-for-point battles, with neither team truly solving the other just yet.
It was the third set that saw Marymount rebound from the second set loss and pummel the Seagulls with a 25-14 win to swipe the 2-1 advantage. The Saints used an early 4-0 run to gain a firm 5-1 lead over the visitors, but were not content just yet. A six-point swing just moments later proved the lethal blow, pushing the Saints to an utterly insurmountable 13-4 advantage. The Blue and White never allowed Salisbury within eight points the rest of the way.
With the advantage and the momentum heading into the fourth set, Marymount never expected its quick 2-0 lead to evaporate quite so quickly. The Seagulls clawed their way back into the match, using a sudden four-point surge to swipe the lead and build momentum. The Saints faced their largest deficit of the day in that final set – a 15-9 Salisbury lead that forced head coach Beth Ann Wilson to use Marymount's final timeout.
The quick break proved the perfect opportunity for the Saints to reset, as the Blue and White slowly began to chip away at the Seagull lead. A series of timely blocks and a dominant Emileigh Rettig arm eventually knotted the score at 20-20, before Becca Schroeder took an authoritative swing to give the Saints a 21-20 lead.
After a Salisbury timeout gave both sides a much-needed breather, the Saints and Seagulls returned to the point-for-point parley with which the night began. The squads exchanged clutch kills and untimely errors until a sure-handed block from Schroeder and Cailyn Thomas gave Marymount a 29-28 advantage and an absolutely unmatched will to win.
After what proved to be a lengthy point, Salisbury went for the kill down the line and missed, handing the Saints the fourth and final set as well as the match.
Rettig registered her ninth double-double of the season in Wednesday's match, posting a team-high 16 kills to supplement her 15 digs. Cassidie Watson proved the defensive staple, registering the team-high 24 digs in the night's effort.
Morgan McAlpin returned in full force after missing several matches due to injury, smacking 14 kills in her first appearance in just over three weeks. The junior also proved the Saints' mainstay at the net, collecting two solo blocks and five block assists in her comeback.
Marymount returns to action on Saturday as it travels to York (Pa.) to face both the CAC host and Muhlenberg in a tri-match event. The Saints' opening match is set for 1 p.m.
