Box Score

Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's women's lacrosse team returned to its winning ways with a 14-7 victory over visiting Wesley in its Capital Athletic Conference opener on Saturday afternoon. The Saints improve to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.

Taylor Johnson and Stephanie Flood led the Saints with three goals each for hat-tricks while Mary Ellen Whitlock added two. Stephanie Keane, Megan McGuirk, Molly Maher, Chelsea Ritter, Lindsay Bullock and Jacki Belker each scored for the Blue and White as well.

Keane notched two assists with Johnson, Maher, McGuirk, Ritter and Catherine Powell each chipping in another.

The Saints scored first just 50 seconds into the game and never looked back. Marymount led 5-0 before the Wolverines (3-5, 0-3 CAC) scored their first goal almost 10 minutes into the opening frame. The Blue and White then closed out the half on a 4-1 run to take a 9-2 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Saints posted three unanswered goal to take a 12-2 lead with 14:05 remaining. Wesley and MU would trade back-to-back goals each to give Marymount a 14-4 lead with just over 17 minutes to play. Wesley managed three late goals but it wasn't enough to overcome the double-figure deficit.

Marymount's defense was solid, causing 11 of Wesley's 25 turnovers and holding the Wolverines to just 11 successful clear attempts in 26 chances. Cecilia Pasquale led the Saints with four caused turnovers while Ritter and Rebecca Durkin added two each.

Pasquale also led the Blue and White with six draw ground balls with Johnson adding three. Flood, Keane and Ritter all collected three draw controls as MU topped Wesley 16-7 in the opening draw.

In goal, all three Saints keepers saw action between the pipes. Kiki Niebuhr (5-2) picked up the win after nearly 43 minutes in goal while Tylar Abrams collected three saves in just under 12 minutes of relief and Molly Ferguson closed out the game.

Jen Jacobs led Wesley with three goals.

Marymount returns to action on Friday as it travels to face York (Pa.) in CAC play.
