Men's Lacrosse Tops Gwynedd-Mercy in Non-Conference Action

Box Score

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – Marymount University's men's lacrosse team earned another non-conference victory with a 9-6 win over Gwynedd-Mercy on Wednesday afternoon. The Saints improve to 3-1 on the year for their best start since the 2008 season.

Juniors Lance Bernecker and Vince Lodato led the Saints with two goals each. Jack Burke, Garrett Nealon, Nico Burns, George Pugh and Jimmy Wendell each added lone goals for the Blue and White as well.

Connor Kellogg notched three assists, Andrew Fournier added a pair and Tyler DaSilva logged one in the win.

Burke opened the scoring with a man-up goal at the 12:29 mark in the first quarter. Marymount and the Griffins (1-2) would trade goals through a 2-2 tie before the Saints posted four unanswered goals to lead 6-2 with 2:19 remaining in the second. Gwynedd-Mercy scored a late goal in the frame to pull within 6-3 going into halftime.

Coming out of the break, GMC scored the first two goals of the second half to make it a 6-5 game halfway through the third. Back-to-back goals from Lodato, one to close the third quarter and another to open the fourth, pushed Marymount back up to an 8-5 advantage. The Griffins would score one more goal with just over 11 minutes remaining before Burns immediately responded 46 seconds later to give the Saints a 9-6 cushion which they'd hold the rest of the way.

Marymount's man-down unit continued to impress, holding the Griffins to just 1-7 on the day. Gwynedd-Mercy scored on its lone man-up opportunity in the first quarter but was shutout the rest of the way on six subsequent chances.

The Saints defense also held GMC scoreless for droughts of 21:37, 10:55 and 11:17.

Derek DiGiovanni (3-1) hauled in 15 saves to earn his third win of the season for MU.

Sam Dupont led the Saints with six ground balls. Max Rowse, Tyler DaSilva and Chris Madison each added three for Marymount.

William Beck led Gwynedd-Mercy with three goals.
