Men's Lacrosse Wins Season Opener

Box Score

Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's men's lacrosse team defeated local rival Catholic 8-6 in the 2013 season opener on Wednesday night. The Saints win their second-straight season opener and defeat the Cardinals for the first time since 2009.

Connor Kellogg led the Saints with a game-high four goals including the game-winner. Ian Gordon added four points with a goal and three assists while Vince Lodato chipped in a goal and assisted on the game-winner.

Jack Burke and Garrett Nealon both notched lone goals as well.

Catholic (1-2) put the first goal on the board at the 11:07 mark before Kellogg responded with back-to-back goals to give MU the lead. The Cardinals would knot the game at 2-2 late in the second before the Saints notched a pair of goals in the final 3:32 minutes to take a 4-2 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the break, CUA scored seven seconds into the half to pull within one but the Saints held the Cardinals scoreless the rest of the quarter. Marymount scored three unanswered goals to go up 7-3 with just one period left to play.

Catholic pulled back within two with a pair of goals to kick off the final frame before Lodato gave the Saints some breathing room with his goal at the 8:20 mark. Marymount's defense held the Cardinals in check the rest of the way, only allowing a late goal with just 2:21 minutes remaining. Lodato would then win the ensuing faceoff as MU didn't allow Catholic to get a shot off the rest of the way.

Gordon had an impressive debut with the Blue and White, converting 7-of-11 faceoff attempts and leading MU with five ground balls. Jacob Holman added four ground balls and pair of caused turnovers while George Pugh and Tyler DaSilva both collected three ground balls.

In goal, Derek DiGiovanni (1-0) picked up the win for the Saints behind a strong 13 save performance.

Brandon Englert led Catholic with three goals.

Marymount returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to face Messiah in Grantham, Pa.
