Men's Lacrosse Remains Unbeaten at Home

Box Score

Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's men's lacrosse team continued to protect its new home turf, defeating visiting Gwynedd-Mercy 7-5 at Long Bridge Park on Wednesday afternoon. The Saints move to 3-2 overall on the year and are an undefeated 3-0 at home.

Six different Saints scored in the win, led by David Huson with a pair of goals. Danny Carson, Connor Kellogg, Lance Bernecker, Nico Burns and Ronnie Sanna each scored as well.

A highly contested game, the Saints never trailed in the contest but never lead by more than two goals. Bernecker and Carson hit consecutive goals for MU in the first quarter within two minutes of each other to give Marymount a 2-0 lead. Gwynedd-Mercy would respond, knotting things up at 2-2 with a pair of goals of its own in the final minutes of the frame.

Huson netted his first goal at the 5:29 mark in the second quarter to help the Saints take a 3-2 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the break, Kellogg pushed the Saints advantage to 4-2 before back-to-back Griffin goals tied things up again with less than a minute to play in the third. Winning the ensuing faceoff, Huson hit home his second goal of the game with just 29 ticks on the clock to put MU up 5-4 going into the final frame.

In the fourth, GMC converted on a man-up opportunity to force another tie at 5-5 with 13 minutes to play. The Saints responded, holding the Griffins scoreless the rest of the way. Marymount also came up big late as Burns nailed the game-winner with 5:34 remaining and Sanna added a cushion goal less than two minutes later.

Marymount continued to split time between the pipes. Ross Fernandez got the start and collected six saved in the first half while Derek DiGiovanni closed things out with four saves in the second half.

Nathan Pendleton led the Griffins (2-3) with three goals.

The Saints return to action on Saturday as it hosts Capital Athletic Conference rival Mary Washington at Long Bridge Park at 3 p.m. The Saints will also celebrate 20 years of lacrosse at Marymount and honor the inaugural 1992 team at halftime.
