Baseball Takes Two to Open Series With Immaculata

TYSONS, Va. - Marymount baseball opened their three game slate with Immaculata with a pair of big wins in a battle of top teams in the Atlantic East Conference.

Ultimately taking the series after the two wins on Saturday, the Saints look to earn the sweep tomorrow on the road after improving to 19-5 overall on the season, 7-1 in the AEC.

GAME ONE

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a pair of scoreless innings to start the first game of the day, the Saints broke through in the bottom of the third inning. After Chad Singleton opened the frame with a single up the middle, Daniel Fernandez bunted him over. With Jordan Hayes pinch hitting, back-to-back singles from Quincy Via and Bobby Leitzel scored Hayes to give MU a 1-0 lead.
  • After the Mighty Macs evened up the tally in the top of the fourth, the Saints answered with a seven spot in the bottom half of the frame. Back-to-back knocks from Ryan Cuadros and Jonathan McMath put two in scoring position for the Saints. After the Saints caused pressure to induce an error, scoring the first run, Jay Beavers shot a single through the left side to score McMath. Fernandez bunted again, this time beating it out for a single and scoring Kevin Knoess. Dickson followed that up with an RBI double to score Beavers. Via punched the big blow, clearing the bases with a triple and two RBI. Cuadros finished out the scoring with an RBI groundout to score Via with ease.
  • Alec Reilly doubled with one away to open up a five-run fifth inning, followed by Jay Beavers and Craig Sodano each reaching via being hit by a pitch. Jordan Dickson knocked in the first run with a single through the right side, followed by a two-RBI knock off the bat of Via. Ryan Cuadros rounded out the runs in the frame with a two-RBI double, scoring both Via and Dickson, to give Marymount a substantial 13-3 lead.
  • Owen Mead and Coleman Grehawick each pitched scoreless frames to close out the game one win.
  • David Muirhead earned his fifth win on the mound, going 5.0 strong innings with five strikeouts.
  • Via went 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBI in the win.
  • Cuadros punched two hits, one a double, with three RBI.
  • Dickson went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored.
  • Leitzel, Beavers, and Fernandez each added an RBI.
GAME TWO

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The second game of the afternoon started much the same, with the two starters dealing early on the push through three scoreless innings.
  • Immaculata broke through in the top of the fourth inning with three runs to take a 3-0 lead in the middle innings.
  • McMath got the Saints on the board with a towering solo home run over the right center wall to give Marymount some life in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The Mighty Macs plated one in the top of the fifth inning, threatening more with the bases loaded and nobody out. Kyle Lewis took over on the mound with a lot of work to do, and he did just that, striking out the next three Immaculata hitters to keep the score tight and shift momentum to the Marymount dugout.
  • The Saints ran with that momentum, taking the lead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. After a pair of strikeouts to open the frame, the Saints continued to add pressure to score all four with two outs. Via singled up the middle, followed by Leitzel reaching via an error, then the gates opened. Cuadros punched a single up the middle to score Via, immediately followed by another single up the middle off the bat of Knoess to score both Cuadros and Leitzel. McMath gave the Saints the lead with another RBI knock through the right side.
  • The Saints addes some insurance in the next inning via another RBI triple from Via.
  • Reilly punched an RBI double to score Cuadros to give the Saints a 7-4 lead after the bottom of the seventh.
  • They added one more in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice fly from Cuadros, scoring Dickson who reached via a single to lead off the frame.
  • Lewis shut the door to earn his second win of the season, going 5.0 hitless innings out of the bullpen with six strikeouts.
  • Via, Knoess, McMath, and Dickson each had two hits in the nightcap.
  • Leitzel, Cuadros, Sodano, and Reilly each added a hit.
UP NEXT
