Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, SC -- The Marymount University closed out its spring break trip with a split against Norwich University and Cairn University on Tuesday with a 9-8 win over Cairn.
Game One
The Saints battled the Cadets of Norwich in their first game of the day but were unable to generate consistent offense against Norwich's Annika Beebe.
Shanyn Burch held the Cadets to just four hits and two earned runs from the pitcher's circle and kept them off of the scoreboard until the third inning. Burch ended the contest with eight strikeouts, her second-most this season.
Samantha Cinotti, Burch, and Jaclyn Burch, all registered hits for the Blue and White, while Jacyln Burch scored the Saints' lone run on a miscue by Norwich in the third inning and finished with a game-high two stolen bases. Cinotti added a stolen base on offense as well.
Game Two
MU's offense found its groove against Cairn with nine runs on 11 hits to earn the win. Cinotti and Nadya Solima led the way for the Saints at the dish. Cinotti went 3-for-4 with three runs, while Soliman went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs.
Shanyn Burch, Shelia Kiernan, Sara Emig, Hailey Leamer, and Jaclyn Burch all chipped in one hit apiece. Jaclyn Burch and Kiernan both finished with one RBI.
Soliman kick-started the Saints' bats in the first inning with a single that plated Cinotti. Cairn scratched across three runs in the top of the third inning to retake the lead, but the Marymount matched the Highlanders with three runs in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead, 4-3.
MU struck again in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Soliman laced a two-RBI single that scored Cinotti and Jaclyn Burch to make it 6-3. The Saints' advantage was short-lived, however, as the Highlanders surged back with three runs in the fifth frame to tie the game.
The Blue and White didn't waver, however, and plated three runs in the sixth inning to retake the lead, 9-6. Cairn threatened with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, but Morgan Hunt settled in and registered a strikeout and a pair of groundouts to seal the victory.
Hunt threw all seven innings for the Saints and earned the win with four strikeouts.
Marymount hosts Shenandoah in its debut at Barcroft Park on Saturday, March 12. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start.
