Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C.-- The Marymount University softball team treated its home fans to a pair of victories on Friday afternoon, as the Saints took both games in a doubleheader against Atlantic East Conference foe Centenary University.
Game One
In the first game of the twin bill, the Saints came out on top in a 5-3 decision. Both sides scattered six hits throughout the game, but MU's more consistent approach at the plate made the difference. Sara Emig led the offense with a 2-for-2 performance at the dish. The freshman plated a team-best two RBI and worked a walk to round out her offensive performance. In the leadoff spot, Samantha Cinotti went 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs as the Blue and White's table-setter.
After Centenary got on the board in the top of the first, the Saints immediately answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. A double from Elizabeth Corcoran and a passed ball allowed the Saints to take the lead.
The Cyclones managed to take a one-run lead in the third inning, but a single from Emig in the bottom half of the inning put the Saints back in the driver's seat. Morgan Hunt put the contest to bed for MU in the fifth inning with a single that plated Emig.
Hunt got the first win of her career in the pitcher's circle with one strikeout in a complete-game effort.
Game Two
MU's offense came alive in game two, as the Saints raced past the Cyclones, 11-3, in six innings.
The Blue and White started the game off with a bang with a four-run first inning. A bases-loaded rally fueled by a single from Emig and a walk from Nadya Soliman gave Marymount an early cushion.
Cinotti extended Marymount's lead in the very next inning, as the rookie launched her first-career home run to straight-away centerfield to put the Saints up 5-0. The Blue and White tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as a double from Kaylynn Johnson plated Corcoran and a single from Emig brought Johnson around to score.
Centenary attempted to mount a comeback in the fifth inning, but starting pitcher Shanyn Burch worked in and out of trouble to keep the Saints ahead, 7-3. Burch kicked off the final rally of the game for the Saints in the sixth inning. After a leadoff double from Corcoran, Burch laced a double into the gap in left-centerfield to make it 8-3. A single from Soliman plated a pair of runs, while an RBI bunt single from Abbie Potter brought the game to a close.
Burch improved to 2-0 in the pitcher's circle after throwing all six innings. The sophomore fanned three batters and surrendered just five hits to pick up the win. Johnson and Emig led the Saints' offense with a 2-for-3 and 2-for-4 performance, respectively. Johnson scored three runs and tallied one RBI, while Emig was credited with two RBI.
MU treks south to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for its next pair of contests on Sunday, March 6. The Saints will take on Blackburn College at 9:30 a.m. and DeSales University at 1:30 p.m.
