Women's Lacrosse Trounces Southern Virginia to Push Win Streak to Nine

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Marymount University women's lacrosse team rolled to its ninth consecutive victory on Wednesday night with a 23-6 drubbing of Southern Virginia University.

The Saints pummeled the Knights, who received votes in the latest IWLCA poll, at Long Bridge Park with their sixth-straight offensive outing with 20 or more goals. Emily Peters led the barrage for Marymount with nine points on six goals and three assists. Sarah Agrillo finished with six points (3g-3a), Riley Love added five (3g-2a), and Taylor Chepren supplied four points (3g-1a).

Taylor Young potted a hat-trick to finish with three points, while Megan Edens matched Young with three points on one goal and two assists. Ella Baker (2g) and Erin Cannon (1g) rounded out the Saints' scorers.

While the Saints' offense hummed to the tune of 39 shots against the Knights, they also stifled Southern Virginia on defense. Marymount forced SVU into 17 turnovers and allowed just 18 shots. MU also finished the game with the edge in ground balls, 23-14, and draw controls, 20-13. In goal, Mariel Russ picked up the win with six saves in 53:23 of action. Hannah Smith closed out the contest in net and made one save.

Marymount took a slim 5-2 lead after the first quarter of play before the Saints exploded for eight goals in the second frame. MU opened the period with three consecutive goals before a five-goal run pushed the Saints ahead, 13-3. Southern Virginia clawed one goal back at the end of the half, but the Blue and White continued the pressure on the other side of the halftime break.

The Saints put together a near-flawless 15 minutes of play in the third quarter as they scored eight unanswered goals during the frame. Peters started the run a little over 30 seconds into the frame. A pair of goals came via free position chances as the Saints' pressure was too much for the Knights to withstand.

SVU eventually found a reprieve in the fourth quarter with a pair of goals. MU answered with goals from Peters, Love, and Cannon, to give the game its final scoreline.

Marymount aims for its 10th consecutive win on Saturday, April 2 when the Saints open Atlantic East Conference action against Marywood University at 1:00 p.m.
