Softball Downs Lynchburg to Open Sea Gull Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. -- The Marymount University softball team opened play at the Sea Gull Classic, hosted by Salisbury University, with a pair of contests against the University of Lynchburg and Susquehanna University. The Saints split the two tilts with a 3-2 win over the Hornets.

Marymount vs. Lynchburg

The Saints started the day off with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Lynchburg.

Marymount leaned on its pitching to stifle the Hornets, as the duo of Morgan Hunt and Shanyn Burch kept Lynchburg scoreless for six innings. Hunt earned the win in the pitcher's circle with two strikeouts in six innings of work. Burch worked the seventh inning and earned a save as she sealed the win for the Saints.

After Lynchburg took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Marymount fired back with a run in the bottom of the second. Jaclyn Burch laced a single into right field that plated Sarah Emig to get the Saints on the board.

The Saints completed the comeback effort in the bottom of the fifth frame. Elizabeth Corcoran started the rally with an infield single. Shanyn Burch followed with a double to left-center that put runners on second and third with no outs. Kaylynn Johnson dug in at the dish in the next at-bat and promptly swatted a single up the middle that scored Corcoran and Burch.

A trio of Saints turned in multi-hit efforts against the Hornets. Shanyn Burch and Johnson each finished 2-for-2, while Jaclyn Burch went 2-for-3. Emig and Corcoran each finished with one hit.

Marymount vs. Susquehanna

Marymount closed out the first day of the Sea Gull Classic against Susquehanna. The Blue and White were unable to generate consistent offense against the Riverhawks, however, as they dropped the matchup, 8-0.

At the plate, Nadya Soliman, Sheila Kiernan, and Hailey Leamer all tallied hits for the Saints. Leamer tallied the first double of her career with her hit. Corcoran worked a pair of walks across three plate appearances.

On defense, Johnson registered a team-best five putouts, while Leamer was credited with two putouts and three assists. Shanyn Burch tossed five innings for the Saints and fanned a pair of batters to bring her season total to 28 strikeouts.

The Blue and White continue play at the Sea Gull Classic on Sunday, March 20, when they take on Susquehanna and Salisbury. MU battles the River Hawks at 11:00 a.m. before challenging the host Sea Gulls at 1:00 p.m.
