Box Score 2 CARY, N.C. --The Marymount University softball team made its debut on Saturday and split a pair of contests at the Triangle Classic with a 14-8 win over LaGrange College.
Game One
In the first-ever game in program history, the Saints came flying out of the gates at the plate. MU clubbed 16 hits and raced past the Panthers 14-8. The Blue and White also worked six walks at the dish to keep a constant parade of runners on the base paths.
The Saints struck in the top of the first inning, as Elizabeth Corcoran scored on an error by the Panthers. Sara Emig followed that up with a two-run double that plated Kaylynn Johnson and Shanyn Burch.
With a 3-0 lead, the Blue and White's offense caught fire again in the third inning. A pair of bases-loaded walks made it a 5-0 game before Johnson dug in at the dish. The sophomore clubbed the first home run in program history with a grand slam to put Marymount up, 9-0.
LaGrange cut into the Saints lead in the third frame, but MU responded with four runs in the fourth inning. Corcoran and Johnson highlighted the push with a pair of doubles that scored three runs. The Saints cruised from there, as Burch earned the win on the mound and Morgan Hunt tossed the final two innings of the contest.
Game Two
The Saints squared off against Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) power Randolph-Macon College in the second game of Saturday's twinbill.
MU was unable to generate much offense, however, as the Yellow Jackets leaned on a strong pitching performance to stifle the Saints' bats. Hailey Leamer and Abbie Potter each worked one walk, but MU was unable to capitalize against Randolph-Macon's stout defense.
Shanyn Bruch fanned a pair of batters in four innings of relief work on the mound.
The Saints make their debut in front of their home fans on Friday, March 4, when they host Centenary University for a pair of games at Nationals Youth Academy. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
