Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. -- A late comeback attempt from the Marymount University women's soccer team wasn't enough on Saturday evening, as the Saints fell to Mary Baldwin University, 4-3, in a tight contest at Long Bridge Park.
After a quiet first half between MU (1-5) and Mary Baldwin (4-3) that saw just five shots, the teams exploded for 20 shots in the second half, which resulted in all seven goals. Despite the Fighting Squirrels firing 14 shots, Mary Mac Bradshaw stood tall with five saves in goal.
Marymount netted the contest's opener a little over two minutes into the half, as Izabella Lopez scored the first goal of her MU career. Lopez fired a curling effort into the left side of the net to put the Saints up, 1-0.
Mary Baldwin was undeterred, however, and poured in three goals over the next 30 minutes to take a 3-1 lead.
Emely Obregon halted the visitor's run in the 82nd minute with her first marker of the season. Laney Placido fed the ball into Obregon who broke through Mary Baldwin's defense and calmly curled the ball past the goalkeeper to cut the Fighting Squirrels' lead.
Mary Baldwin managed to answer once again three minutes later, as Marymount continued to push for the equalizer. The Saints pulled back within one in the 86th minute, as Emma Peet netted the first goal of her career.
Peet cleaned up a loose ball in front of the goal after a shot from Placiod was turned away. The freshman wasted little time and fired the ball into the back of the net. It was too little, too late for MU, however, as Mary Baldwin held on for the win.
The Saints travel to Frederick, Maryland for their next contest on Wednesday, September 22, against Hood College at 7:00 p.m.
