Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Marymount University men's soccer team fell in heartbreaking fashion on Saturday afternoon, as Hampden-Sydney College stole a win at Long Bridge Park with an overtime tally.
It was a back-and-forth contest all afternoon, as plenty of the game took place in the middle of the park. Shots leaned towards Hampden-Sydney (2-2-1), 13-12, but Marymount (3-4-0) owned a decided advantage in corner kicks, 10-5.
Marymount opened the scoring for the contest 13 minutes in. Brandon Jardine collected the ball on the left flank and drove into the Tigers' territory. The junior spotted Leonardo Torres as he broke through Hampden-Sydney's backline and whipped a long ball into his path. Torres made no mistake and chipped the ball over the Tigers' Connor Kitson for his Atlantic East Conference-leading eighth goal of the season.
The Tigers highlighted the topsy-turvy nature of the contest six minutes later, as an accidental handball in the box led to a penalty chance for the visitors. Kade Wheeler slotted the ball home and knotted the score at 1-1.
Each team had a few chances as the half drew to a close, but the Saints came alive after the halftime break. Carlos Varona was the dangerman with his first goal of the season just 27 seconds into the second half. Torres started the play after he intercepted an errant pass from the Hampden-Sydney goalkeeper. The rookie quickly found Varona and the junior did not disappoint, as he looped the ball up and over Kitson to make it 2-1.
MU's defense buckled down from there and stifled the Tigers over the next 26 minutes, but Hampden-Sydney capitalized on an MU miscue in the 72nd minute to tie the game. Kevin Cassinera had a chance in the 84th minute, but the sophomore's attempt narrowly missed the goal frame to send the game into overtime.
Neither side generated many chances to open up the overtime period, but Hampden-Sydney managed to break through in the 98th minute. Brian Cruz spurned the Tigers' first shot, but MU was unable to collect the rebound and Hampden-Sydney's Jack Delaney fired the ball past Cruz to close the contest.
Cruz played the full 97:16 in goal and tallied one save. Torres (1g-1a) registered his fifth consecutive multi-point effort, while Varona has now placed his name on the scoresheet for the second-straight game.
Marymount hits the road for its next contest, when it heads to the Keystone State for a battle against York College (Pa.). Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Prior to today's game, the Saints celebrated their past with an alumni game on the Long Bridge Park turf.
