Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Marymount University men's soccer team turned in a dominant performance on Wednesday evening, as the Saints routed Wilson College, 4-0 at Long Bridge Park.
Marymount (3-3) controlled possession from the opening whistle against Wilson (0-3), which resulted in a whopping 39-1 advantage in shots. MU's omnipotent performance was further emphasized by its edge in corner kicks, which stood at 11-0 at the final whistle.
The Saints' offensive outburst was spearheaded by first-year forward Leonardo Torres. The Manassas, Virginia, native tallied two goals and two assists, which puts him at the top of the national leaderboard with 18 points. His goal total of seven is tied for second in the country. Sophomores Axel Gonzalez and Kevin Cassinera both netted the first goals of their respective careers to round out MU's goalscorers.
Wison took a defensive posture from the start of the contest, which kept MU at bay for a good portion of the first half. Marymount broke through in the 34th minute, however, as Gonzalez buried a shot from the top of the 18-yard box after the ball was laid off from Torres. The Saints struck again three minutes later, as a pair of quick passes from Carlos Varona and Torres freed Cassinera to fire in the second goal of the contest.
Marymount stayed on the hunt as the first half wore on and Torres nabbed his first goal of the game on a solo effort. Torres netted the contest's final goal close to a minute later as he laced the ball into the lower-left corner.
The Phoenix mustered their lone shot of the contest in the second half, but MU's Brian Cruz calmly dealt with the attempt to preserve the shutout. In goal, Eduardo Cardonne earned the win in a quiet 76:48 of work. Cruz finished with one save in 13:12.
MU remains at home for its next contest when it hosts Hampden-Sydney College at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 18.
