Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. -- Two second-half goals made the difference for the Marymount University men's soccer team on Saturday evening, as the Saints earned a 3-2 victory in a hotly contested game against Shenandoah University.
The Saints jumped all-over the Hornets in the opening moments of the contest. Just eight minutes into the game, Anthony Solorzano delivered his first goal of the season to put Marymount up 1-0.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Zach Salazar answered for the home side just five minutes later. Both sides continued to pepper each other's net from there as the first half wore on. Nicholas Vigo tested Shenandoah's netminder in the 36th minute, but the rookie's attempt was spurned away. Jared Williams had another opportunity with nine seconds left on the clock, but his attempt was cleared away from goal by a defender to keep the score knotted at 1-1.
Shenandoah came out of the break with a renewed ferocity and it paid off in the 51st minute. Branden Gallant managed to sneak a shot past Brian Cruz to make it 2-1. The physicality continued to ramp up as MU searched for an equalizer. The home side wilted under the pressure, as Derek Rivera rifled a shot bar-down and into the twine to level the score at 2-2.
MU's resurgent effort continued to pay off just two minutes later. Freshman Manny Gaunaurd continued his strong rookie campaign with his second goal. Gaunaurd slotted home a pass from Solorzano.
As time wound down, the Hornets fired one more attempt on goal, but Cruz turned away the shot to seal the 3-2 victory.
Marymount returns home on Wednesday, March 17, for a tilt against Stevenson University. The contest is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
