Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Marymount University men's basketball team stayed hot offensively on Saturday afternoon, as the Saints raced past Ramapo College, 76-57, in the opening round of the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament.
Marymount rolled to a 19-point victory on the heels of a solid shooting performance from the floor. MU knocked down 50.0% (31-for-62) of its field goals and hit 32.0% (8-for-25) of its attempts from deep.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Saints forced Ramapo into 25 turnovers and registered a game-high 12 steals. The Blue and White also chased the Roadrunners off of the 3-point line for the majority of the contest and limited the visitors to just two made three's.
The trio of Marcus Stubbs, Montell Cooper, and Xavier Reaves led the way for Marymount throughout the tilt. Stubbs provided a scoring punch off of the bench with 16 points. The sophomore did most of his damage from downtown with four three-pointers and ended the game with a 66.7% mark from deep.
Cooper and Reaves each tallied 13 points to round out MU's double-digit scorers. Reaves finished one board shy of a double-double with nine. Cooper added a team-high six assists to go along with four steals and three rebounds.
After a back-and-forth start to the contest, the Saints created some separation with a 9-0 run that spanned nearly two minutes. Nick Rivas started the run with a 3-pointer with 9:39 on the clock. Cooper, Jack Bifano, and Wyatt Hockenberry supplied the rest of the firepower as the Blue and White raced out to a 26-16 lead. MU maintained its edge the rest of the way, as Stubbs knocked down a three with four seconds on the clock to put the Blue and White up, 45-32 at the half-time break.
While MU maintained its edge for the remainder of the contest, the Roadrunners chipped away at the Saints' lead and pulled back within nine with an eight-point run of their own, which was capped by a layup from Justin Bladen. After a timeout, Stubbs responded for the Saints with a deep make off a feed from Zamir Clifton. With Ramapo's comeback effort stunted, the Saints cruised as a layup from Roey Stern gave the game its final scoreline.
The Saints return to the court on Sunday afternoon for the championship game of the Pablo Coto Tip-off Tournament. MU is slated to play Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at 2:00 p.m.
