Box Score IMMACULATA, Pa. -- Marymount University men's soccer improved to a perfect 3-0 in Atlantic East Conference play in thrilling fashion on Saturday evening with a stunning five-goal comeback victory over Immaculata University.
With the victory, the Saints sit atop the Atlantic East landscape with Cabrini University, which has a 4-0 record in conference action. The win also marked a special occasion for Head Coach Nathan Kalin, who picked up his 100th career victory in the collegiate ranks.
The contest did not swing Marymount's way in the first half, as Immaculata raced out to a 3-0 lead over the first 45 minutes. The Mighty Macs opened the scoring in the 11th minute and added their other markers in the 25th, and 44th minutes to close out the frame.
Despite the large deficit, the Saints came out firing in the second half with a 10-2 advantage in shots. Derek Rivera got the Saints on the board in the 52nd minute, but Immaculata managed to make it a 4-1 contest a little under a minute later.
Once again, the Blue and White rose to the occasion, as they found the back of the net just 29 seconds later. Second-year talent Manny Gaunaurd found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season after he was set up by Torres.
With the deficit cut in half, Marymount's momentum-swinging run marched on into the 65th minute. The Saints forced Immaculata's Garrett Pepper into three saves over the near-13-minute stretch, and the effort paid off via Kevin Cassinera. The sophomore collected a pass from classmate Axel Gonzalez and promptly buried a shot into the twine to make it a one-goal game.
The Saints kept their foot firmly pressed on the gas pedal and eventually earned a penalty kick in the 66th minute. Torres answered the call for the Saints and the rookie calmly slotted the ball home to tie the score.
Marymount completed the improbable comeback just three minutes later, as Torres once again showed why he is one of the top talents in the Atlantic East. The first-year talisman potted the game-winner off of a pass from Nicholas Vigo to give the Saints the lead. The Saints' defense took over from there and held the Mighty Macs without a shot for the remainder of the contest.
MU ended the wild tilt with an 18-11 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. In goal, Ronald Clark and Brian Cruz split the 90 minutes in net, as Clark tallied two saves.
Coach's Take
"Words can't describe the feeling this team shared tonight," said head coach Nathan Kalin. "It was an incredible comeback, one they will talk about many years from now. I'm beyond proud of this group. At halftime, I asked them to reflect and search for who they wanted to be as a team. They responded with such unity and passion, but most importantly, discipline. When we got to 4-3 I knew, they were going to pull it out."
The Blue and White will look to extend their four-game win streak on Wednesday, October 20, when they welcome Centenary University to Long Bridge Park at 3:00 p.m.
