Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount University men's soccer team turned in a dominant performance at Long Bridge Park on Wednesday night in a 4-1 win over Gwynedd Mercy University.
MU flexed its offensive muscle against the Griffins and dominated possession of the ball throughout the tilt. The Saints' ball dominance resulted in a massive 35-1 edge in shots and a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks.
While Gwynedd Mercy received 12 saves from John Wagner in net, Marymount's relentless pressure paid off in spades throughout the Atlantic East Conference tilt. MU got the scoring started in the 20th minute, as Manny Gaunaurd found the back of the net off of a through ball from Derek Rivera.
Rivera got in on the scoring act himself close to seven minutes later to double MU's advantage. A failed clearance attempt from Gwynedd Mercy landed at Rivera's feet near the top of the 18-yard box. The junior wasted little time and fired a shot that found its way into the bottom left corner to make it 2-0.
Gwynedd Mercy managed to nick a goal back before the end of the first half, as Kyle Burke snuck a shot past MU's Ronald Clark.
The Griffins packed in behind the ball in the second half, which kept the Saints at bay until the 83rd minute. Marymount cracked the code via Gaunaurd, who beat a pair of defenders and raced into the right side of the box. The sophomore rifled a shot toward the left corner that rattled off the inside of the post and into the back of the net.
With a two-goal edge, the Saints continued to push for another marker. The effort came to fruition two minutes later as Leonardo Torres scored his conference-leading 13th goal of the season. After Marvin Munoz earned a free-kick for the Saints right at the edge of the box, Rivera took the chance quickly and sent a pass into the path of Torres, who flashed towards goal and flicked the ball past Wagner for the score.
With tonight's win, the Saints are one of three Atlantic East institutions with unblemished conference records, as they joined Cabrini (3-0) and Neumann (2-0) at the top of the standings.
Marymount hits the road for its next tilt on Saturday, October 16, when it battles Immaculata University at 3:30 p.m.
