Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. - The Marymount University women's lacrosse team put together two halves of 10 goals each, rolling to a 20-12 victory over Alvernia University to move to 5-0 for the season.
The 5-0 start to the year is the first time accomplished in program history, as Head Coach Kate Athing, in her sixth season at the helm of the program, has the Saints firing on all cylinders.
Offensively, Marymount has a young core that has been consistently finding the back of the net, and on Wednesday evening it was freshman Riley Love, who put away a career- and game-high seven goals. She was joined by sophomore Sarah Agrillo with seven points, scoring five goals and sending out two assists, and sophomore Taylor Young with four goals. Agrillo now has 21 points for the season off 16 goals and five assists, leading the squad in points and goals.
Agrillo and Love, who accumulated for 12 of the 20 goals for MU, started the scoring for the Saints with the first three goals to push the early 3-0 advantage over Alvernia in the initial four minutes.
By the half, Marymount carried a 10-5 advantage into the break, outshooting AU, 19-13.
In the second half, the Saints needed two less shots to put away the same amount of goals. Love did most of her work in the final 30 minutes, scoring six of the 10 Marymount goals in the period, four of which were on free-position shots.
Although the Saints didn't win the draw control battle, they made Alvernia work for any type of offense, forcing 29 turnovers. Of the 29 turnovers, Marymount earned causes on 12 of them led by sophomore Emily Peters with three and sophomore Caitlyn Dunn and Young with two each.
Back in the net, senior Meagan Gagnon earned her fifth win, tending for 49:23 for six saves. Sophomore Kallie Collett came in for the final 10:37, the first game she has played donning the blue and white.
The Saints will look to ride this momentum into their next game on Saturday, March 7, hosting DeSales University at Long Bridge Park. The Bulldogs' staff includes Marymount's career points and assists record holder, Abby Wescott, as she makes her first return to Long Bridge Park in a different capacity, as the graduate assistant coach. Start time is set for 1 p.m.
