Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. - Behind a pair of 20-plus point efforts, the Marymount University men's basketball team overcame a double-digit deficit on Wednesday night to topple Cabrini University, 75-72, in an Atlantic East Conference matchup to seal up the season sweep.
Junior Steve Etienne and senior LaDarius McCord put on a show in the game, knocking in career-high nights in scoring. Etienne dropped in a game-high 27 points, while McCord matched his career high from last season against Catholic with 26 points including the final two free throws of the game to solidify the win.The pair scored over 70 percent of the Saints' points for the night.
A tale of two halves had the Cavaliers building up to their largest lead of the game by the midway mark of the first half at 21-9. From that point, the Saints slowly chipped away at their deficit to close in to four points with 5:39 remaining until the break after freshman Jared Perry found Etienne for a lay-in.
Cabrini maintained its advantage at the break, but it was closer than the Cavs had wanted when the final minute showed Etienne knocking in a jumper and McCord following with a three-pointer.
Trailing by just six, 41-35, the Saints shot just 37.1 percent from the floor. That all changed in the second half when MU came out firing with the first two buckets on McCord layups to open the second half.
The battle continued as the Saints used a seven-point stretch near the midway mark of the second half to take their first lead since the early part of the first half. In the run, McCord had a free throw, Perry had a jumper, and Etienne had a lay-up and a dunk that pushed the advantage into the favor of MU, 54-52.
Over the next several minutes, the lead swayed back-and-forth until a McCord three-point off the dish from senior Josh Giardina put the Saints in the lead the rest of the way.
It didn't go without work though, with MU earning the win at the free-throw line down the stretch. In the final seven minutes of the game, the Saints went 6-for-7 at the line including two with 15 seconds left by McCord to seal the game.
Etienne added a tied team-high eight rebounds with senior Taiga Walker to go along with his 27 points, three assists, three steals, and a block. Walker also contributed three steals, as the team finished with 12 for the night.
The Saints are now 12-9 overall, 5-3 in the league. With four games left in the regular season, they currently sit in sole possession of third place in the Atlantic East behind Wesley (7-1) and Gwynedd Mercy (6-1).
They'll look to continue their momentum on the road this Saturday, February 8, as they head to Neumann University for a 3 p.m., tip.
