Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. - Free throws by sophomore Ibrahim Kamara and freshman Steve Etienne in the final 52 seconds proved to be the difference as the Marymount men's basketball team posted a 67-64 CAC victory over St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday at Verizon Sports Arena.
The Saints (6-11, 5-5 CAC) posted their third win in the last five games despite shooting just 14-of-22 from the free throw line.
Etienne finished with a game-high 17 points and added five assists while junior Brandon Rogers added 16 points and five rebounds. The two combined to go 6-for-9 from three-point range. Senior Dimitri Rucker ahd 11 points and nine rebounds, just missing his first double double of the season and the eighth of his career. He had nine points and 13 rebounds in the first meeting between the two this season on December 2.
With the game tied at 64, Kamara grabbed a huge offensive rebound on a missed three-point attempt by Marymount with under a minute remaining. He also drew the foul and hit both free throws to give the Saints a 66-64 lead with 52 seconds left.
On the ensuing possession, the Seahawks (3-14, 2-8 CAC) missed an attempt to tie the game with 38 seconds to play before Kamara came up with rebound once again. Unfortunately, he missed the front end of the 1-and-1 and St. Mary's had another chance to tie the game or take the lead.
However, the Seahawks were thwarted again as Ochae Bynum's jumper was blocked by Etienne with 13 seconds remaining. Etienne's free throw with nine seconds to play pushed Marymount's advantage to three and the visitors couldn't get off a third attempt to tie the game as the Saints improved to 5-2 this season in games decided by three points or less.
After trailing by three at the half, Marymount outscored St. Mary's 31-24 in the second and was 8-of-12 from the free throw line.
Marymount wraps up its four-game homestand on Wednesday when it hosts Salisbury for an 8 p.m., contest at Verizon Sports Arena.
