Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. – Junior Abby Wescott, who finished with a game-high five points, put away the most important goal of the game in overtime on Monday night, helping the Marymount (Va.) University women's lacrosse team to an 11-10 victory over Bridgewater (Va.) College in a non-conference showdown at Long Bridge Park.
With senior Natalie Tinkham winning the opening draw of the overtime period, the Saints maintained the only offensive possession that was needed. Seeing several Eagle fouls blow the play dead, the final play went to the stick of Wescott who slashed in for the low finish and the game winner less than three minutes in to give MU its eighth victory of the year.
The way the game ended was similar to the way it started, as the contest was much into the favor of the Saints from the opening whistle. Marymount found the back of the net three times in the first 12 minutes to take a 3-0 advantage over Bridgewater. Freshman Eliana Cassel kicked off the scoring off a dish from Wescott before sophomore Jessica Crew put away back-to-back free-position goals.
The remainder of the first half was all Bridgewater, as it went on a six-goal stretch to carry a 6-3 advantage into the half.
A scoring draught had neither team finding the back of the net through the first six minutes of the second half until the Eagles tacked on another on a free-position finish of their own to take their largest lead of four.
The Saints didn't back down though, catching fire with four-straight goals to draw the score even at 7-7 by the 17:30 mark. Wescott and Crew opened the scoring before junior Kellen Cannon knocked in two free-position finishes to cap off the stretch.
From there out, both teams traded goals until the final horn, seeing the Eagles score three more times while sophomore Bridgette Stacom notched two and Wescott added another to send the game to overtime all tied up at 10-10.
The Saint defense was on point through the game, especially late in regulation, causing 10 turnovers led by a tied career-high five by junior Liah Agouras. She also registered a tied career-high five ground balls.
At the draw, Tinkham pulled in seven wins, moving her to 158 for her career, good enough to move her into second place in the program record book.
Sophomore Holly Reik earned the victory in the net, making 11 saves in her nearly 63 minutes between the pipes.
The Saints will head on the road for their next game, traveling to Southern Virginia University on Wednesday, March 27 for a Capital Athletic Conference tilt. First draw is set for 5 p.m.
