Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. – It all came down to the final second on Saturday afternoon in the Marymount (Va.) University women's lacrosse team's matchup against Christopher Newport University, as the tied contest was broken on a leaning finish by the Captains with just one second remaining to take the 12-11 decision at Long Bridge Park.
It was an intense finish to what played out to be a thrilling matchup between the two squads. Overcoming a six-point deficit in the first half, the Saints had things knotted up with nine minutes remaining in regulation when back-to-back finishes by junior Kellen Cannon and sophomore Bridget Odom drew the score even at 10-10.
Following a timeout by Marymount, the draw control went into favor of the Captains who ate over three minutes off the clock before taking the one-goal lead at the 5:56 mark.
A crucial next draw unfortunately went into the stick of CNU, as the Saints needed a turnover to have an opportunity to tie the contest up again. With time ticking down under three minutes, that's exactly what the Saints created. Sophomore Alex Delgado came in for the double team with senior Meghan Higgins to pressure the Captains into a poor pass. With the ball moving toward the midfield, the pass went low for CNU's Mariah Ginebra who was unable to fully stick it. Disrupting any attempt to get it in her stick, sophomore Kelly Campbell maneuvered herself between Ginebra and the ball, scooped it up and headed the other way.
With the chance needed to draw it even, sophomore Bridgette Stacom drove into the fan to fire off a shot that was saved by CNU freshman keeper, Kaitlyn Ready. However, the ball rolled back out where Campbell scooped it up and dished it to sophomore Jessica Crew at the top of the 12-meter fan. In an isolation situation, Crew juked her defender and bolted into the eight-meter fan to rip a low shot. Clipping off the top of Ready's stick, the ball slowly rolled across the goal line with 1:47 remaining to tie it up at 11-11.
Catching the momentum, the Saints won the ensuing draw, as Campbell went for the loose ball off the draw and CNU's Meaghan Galvin was called for the foul on the empty-stick check. With the opportunity now to go ahead in the closing minute, Crew was given the ball again. This time, the sophomore curled around the front of the net from the left side, taking a contested shot that was pulled in by Ready and sent the other way with just 25 seconds remaining.
Completing the clear quickly, the Captains moved the ball around the backside of the net and put it in the stick of senior captain Galvin. Galvin, marked tightly by senior Catina Boster, took a quick first step with just a small amount of room on the right side to lean in at the edge of the crease for a low, left finish with one second remaining to seal up the 12-11 decision.
Crew paced the Saints for the day with a hat trick of goals, while Campbell and Stacom added two finishes apiece.
The Saints will look to bounce back on Wednesday, March 22, hosting Shenandoah University for a non-conference matchup at Long Bridge Park. First draw is set for 4 p.m.
