Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. – The three pointers were falling for the Marymount (Va.) University men's basketball team late on Saturday afternoon to erase a double-digit deficit to Wesley College, but the Saints ran just short on time, falling 78-76 to the Wolverines in a Capital Athletic Conference battle.
Trailing by 11 with 45 seconds remaining in the contest, the Saints weren't giving up quite yet. A steal by junior Dimitri Rucker was capitalized on the other end of the court when senior Michael Anderson kicked the ball to the wing where sophomore Brandon Rogers knocked in the three-pointer.
Keeping the defensive pressure, Marymount eventually forced the Wolverines to turn the ball over on their next possession to give the Saints the ball back with 29 seconds remaining. It was just three seconds later on the inbounds that freshman Josh Giardina fed the ball to Rogers again, this time at the top of the key, dropping his second-straight three pointer to put the Saints within five, 76-71, with 26 seconds left.
Coming out of a timeout, the Saints quickly fouled, sending a Wolverine to the line, who knocked in both. On the other end, freshman LaDarius McCord drove the lane with 11 seconds remaining to get Marymount back within five. The Saints would hit another three before the final buzzer, coming from the hands of Anderson, but the lack of time halted them at a two-point deficit for the 78-76 decision.
The first half was a close-knit battle, with two ties and three lead changes, but Wesley would separate itself to take a 39-32 advantage into the locker room.
Marymount was paced on offense by McCord with 16 points, while Rogers, Rucker and Anderson chipped in for 14, 13 and 12, in that order.
The Saints return to action on Wednesday, February 8, traveling down to No. 3 Christopher Newport University for another league tilt. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
